Add Internet addiction to psychiatric disorders, says doctor: “Last week, we covered news from the Solutions Research Group regarding their report on Disconnect Anxiety; a condition that they claim can result from Internet deprivation. Although it sounds at first like a laughing matter, it’s one that is gaining currency among some within the field of psychiatry. An editorial in the current American Journal of Psychiatry argues that Internet and gaming addiction should be added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) V, the handbook of mental disorders used by mental health workers in the US.”

UFO home sold at auction: “The delightful ‘Space House’ in Chattanooga, Tennessee sold at auction this weekend for just $135,000. The 38-year-old, three-bedroom home was expected to go for much more, according to the auctioneer. From The Associated Press:
The house has a retractable staircase that lowers to the ground. A neighbor says that feature came in handy for one former owner who was having an argument with her husband. She pulled up the stairway, drove her husband’s truck underneath it so he couldn’t get the stairs down and left him stuck inside.

‘A is for Acid Monkey’: “One of our agents in the field reported on this unusual site:
The sponsored link line on gmail this morning read:
Monkey on Acid – aisforacidmonkey.com – It’s a monkey. It’s on acid.
The link is to a piece of art, a degraded photo of a monkey in a cage, staring at its hand as many a tripper have done before. I’m not sure if the monkey is on acid, but I found it a memorable print. Talk about non sequitur of the first order.”

Dallas considers shutting off red light cams, since they’re working too well and harming revenue: “
Filed under: Digital Cameras, Transportation
There’s just one, fairly ironic, flaw to the otherwise totally lovable red light cameras that adorn Dallas: they work too well. Turns out the cams have curtailed red light infractions by 50 percent, which in turn has put a budget crunch on City Hall. The city is now considering stopping its planned rollout of more cameras, or shutting down the cameras on a rotating basis — upkeep when off is next to nothing, but the city pays $3,799 per month per online camera to its service provider. That sounds like quite a spendy broadband bill, but we’re not the experts here. Just remember kids, your government wants what’s best for you, and what’s best for you is a well-funded government, alright?

Tibet: China blocks YouTube, protests spread, bloggers react – Boing Boing: “* Above left: phonecam snapshots of protests in Amdo, Tibet, over the weekend; at right, phonecam video of the same.
* According to Shanghaiist (and now, mainstream news outlets), YouTube was blocked in China over the weekend, likely because of content related to the flood of pro-Tibetan-sovereignty protests in Tibet and elsewhere:
International news channels such as CNN and BBC are also getting routinely blacked out. While we think this is a really poor way to deal with all the shit that’s going on, we have been there many, many times, and survived. Time to turn on your VPN again, people! An
* John Kennedy at Global Voices confirms the YouTube block:
As Tibet transitioned into total lockdown and videos of the violent situation proliferated on YouTube, people began noticing Saturday afternoon in China that the video-sharing website could not be accessed. Tech blogger Rick Martin on the CNET Asia Little Red Blog has done some tests which confirm what many have assumed:

Wired on Apple: “Pray” to “Evil Genius” in 11 Years: “Wired’s April cover has Apple on it, and long time readers and Macheads will notice the similarities between this and the June 1997 issue’s art. But while the earlier cover read ‘Pray’ this one reads ‘Evil/Genius’, an homage to the decisions The Steve has made in the face of conventional business school wisdom, and the personality driving it all. The time gap between the covers does a good job of putting Apple’s ascension into perspective; this did not happen overnight.

Google News, YouTube blocked in China amid Tibet riots: “China has blocked access to Google News and YouTube in an apparent attempt to stop the spread of video footage related to the rioting in several cities in Tibet, including the capital Lhasa. Endor On Earth: Bellavista’s Biodigesting Treehouses Are Endor on Earth: “Finca Bellavista is an Endor-like treehouse village in the making, with paths and platforms perched on 150-foot trees. Located six miles from Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica, this sustainable rainforest community doesn’t have stupid Ewoks or shield generators, but cute monkeys, site-wide Wi-Fi with internet sat link and biodigestors running on solar power. Calls for Olympic boycott after Tibet brutality – Telegraph: “Mr Obama said he was deeply disturbed by reports of a crackdown and arrests, and called on the Chinese government to respect the basic human rights of the people of Tibet.
‘This is the year of the Beijing Olympics. It represents an opportunity for China to show the world what it has accomplished in the last several decades,’ he said. ‘Those accomplishments have been extraordinary and China’s people have a right to be proud of them, but the events in Tibet these last few days unfortunately show a different face of China.’
