Comcast sues FCC for not letting it own anything it wants

Comcast sues FCC for not letting it own anything it wants: “Given Comcast’s notoriously shady service, we’re not exactly in favor of the company being allowed to ruthlessly torture service any more markets than necessary, but we can see why it might be a little frustrated with the FCC, which has allowed all sorts of giant phone companies to merge in the past few years, yet still recently decided to block cable companies from owning more than 30 percent of the market. Comcast and the FCC have butted heads in the past on similar regulatory issues, but this one should be particularly interesting, since FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is currently the focus of a congressional probe into his handling of the agency. We can actually sort of see Comcast’s point — the FCC probably should allow giant telco mergers while arbitrarily capping cable ownership, but really we’d prefer a lot more competition and a hell of a lot more focus on customer service from all of these companies instead of yet more lawsuits and paperwork”

Wide-angle camera color frames (taken on 2 Aug 2005) were composited to make an approximately natural color view of Earth. The Moon image was taken several days earlier (31 Jul 2005) by the narrow-angle camera and colorized using lower resolution color data taken by the wide-angle camera a couple of hours earlier. The montage does not represent an actual arrangement of the Moon and Earth seen from the probe, nor does it represent relative sizes of the two bodies. It’s two distinct composites (taken at different times) put together. The Moon’s brightness was brought up for better visibility. Phase angle of the Moon was 66 degrees, Earth was at a phase of 51 degrees. Comments chop [From Earth and Moon from MESSENGER on Flickr – Photo Sharing!]

FCC may do-over Comcast Net Neutrality hearing due to presence of paid Comcastards

FCC may do-over Comcast Net Neutrality hearing due to presence of paid Comcastards:
Yesterday on Boing Boing, we shared first-hand reports from the guys at Miro that Comcast hired goons to fill seats and cheer at an FCC hearing over net neutrality at Harvard. Today, Jordan at Valleywag points us to this update:

The FCC is considering holding a fresh hearing on net neutrality, with Comcast and Verizon again in attendance — and this time it may be at Stanford. The do-over after a mini-scandal erupted over the first hearing, held at Harvard; Comcast flacks confessed they’d paid people off the street to act as seatwarmers. Let this be a lesson to you all: If you’re going to meddle in politics, do it skillfully enough not to get caught.
The Harvard hearing, a rare outside-the-Beltway event, ended disastrously for all involved. The hearing had many more attendees than were expected, with the room running out of space well before the hearing began. As a result, dozens of members of the public and opposition groups were refused entry. Comcast’s ruse was detected when some of its fresh hires fell asleep.
