MUTANT SOUNDS
MUTANT SOUNDS: “To accompany our share of side A of the brand new VDO LP ‘Ninth Ward Fourth World’, it seemed apropos to also unleash this, the first of two collaborations VDO undertook with Christopher Moock (the second being the Vas Dererens Organization & Christopher-Suspension LP on Beta-Lactam Ring) prior to Messr. Moock joining VDO officially some 5 years back, casting as it does some light on how Chris and his sensibility slot into the mix. In truth though, much of this particular release could also be viewed as a Muz and Christopher collaboration, as aside from the last third of side B, I’m wholly absent from this one, these recordings having come together very rapidly over these course of a weekend while I was away, with Miasmata principally consisting of Matt manipulating and building out material submitted by Chris and my coming in on the end stretch and adding a cherry on top. The results sit midway between the sustained amniotic electronic probings of Matt’s eponymous first Muz LP, the krautrock-indebted jamming periodically heard our collaborations with Brad Laner and a sorta swarming avant garde-ish synth-y symphonism suggestive of The Legendary Pink Dots.

MUTANT SOUNDS: VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION-NINTH WARD FOURTH WORLD LP – AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AND FREE PARTIAL DOWNLOAD NOW!: “Yes, the wait is finally over folks. The first new album by Vas Deferens Organization (Eric Lumbleau, Matt Castille, Christopher Moock) under our own banner in nine years (coming on the heels of all our recent work with Ariel Pink as Shits And Giggles and Ariel Pink with Added Pizzazz) is now finally upon us. The first title out of the gate in our new 33 1/3 degree series on our Free Dope And Fucking In The Streets imprint, Ninth Ward Fourth World represents the distillation of the VDO aesthetic to a 151 proof fine science; a collapsing of the sinister, the absurd and the sublime into a reality-annihilating gravitational nexus. We’ve spared no expense in the creation of this remarkable and extremely limited audio artifact, with both the front and back of the jacket sporting full sized four-color hard plastic laminated panels and with eye-popping artwork laser etched into the center of the 180 gram vinyls in place of labels. This LP and all future releases in this series are limited to only 100 physical copies.
With a official release date of Nov. 13, this LP is offered on a strictly first come, first served basis and is limited to 3 copies per customer. Pre-orders are now being accepted Here
and look out for further new albums on Free Dope And Fucking In The Streets by Vas Deferens Organzation and it’s satellites as well as the highly anticipated third album from avant pop auteur/one man band/ex-pitchfork scribe Dominique Leone.

Marijuana Soda? Medicinal Users Now Have Smoke-Free Option – TIME NewsFeed
Thirsty? Why not open an ice-cold bottle of pot-infused root beer?
A new line of pot-infused beverages masquerading behind soda flavors are now available to patients with a prescription for medical marijuana. Made by Colorado-based Dixie Elixirs, the carbonated drinks are marketed to medicinal-marijuana patients who wish to avoid “weed culture” stigmas.

Veggie num num : Pea & Avocado Penne
This simple penne pasta recipe came about with a desire to create vegan creamy pesto style pasta. I love pea mash, the colour and sweet flavour and avocado seemed an ideal ingredient to produce the right texture. Throw in some more green with baby spinach and green beans and you have a colourful, healthy and really tasty vegan pasta recipe.
I included the pine nuts because they are a favourite of ours and give the dish an authentic pesto taste; for a non vegan version crumble through some feta cheese before serving. The pea and avocado mash would also work great as a spread on bruschetta or as a dip with crispy bread.
Quick and easy to make this vegetarian pasta is delicious served warm or could be made ahead of time and served as a cold pasta salad. Green, creamy and delicious; perfectly yummy penne pasta for happy bellies
Harvard Square’s Twisted Village to close July 25
The phone at Twisted Village rang again a little after one o’clock last Thursday afternoon.
Letting several rings go by, owner Wayne Rogers reluctantly picked up, already knowing the question poised on the other end.
“Yes, it’s true,” Rogers said gently. “July 25.”
Sunday will be Twisted Village’s final day of business, capping a 14-year run that would see the subterranean Harvard Square record shop sell countless vinyl discs, host too-many-to-count in-store appearances — Wizz Jones, Richard Bishop, and Thurston Moore among Rogers’s most memorable — and establish itself as one of the most respected music havens in the country.

Pitchfork: Listen: New Ariel Pink With Added Pizzazz: “Hot Body Rub”
A few weeks back, we hit you with “In the Heat of the Night” from lo-fi pop weirdo Ariel Pink’s new collaborative EP with Dallas avant-jazz outfit Added Pizzazz (or Yells at Eels, for those Dallas avant-jazz die-hards out there). The EP is out now via Free Dope and Fucking in the Streets and is only available for purchase during Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti’s current tour. Take a listen to another cut from the collection, “Hot Body Rub”, right now.
“Hot Body Rub” is the extended cut of the sax-led jam of the same name that kicks off the BNM’d Before Today, featuring more saxophone action– and weird grunting, of course. Have a listen over at We All Want Someone to Shout For.

Ariel Pink… Now With Added Pizzazz | Line Out | The Stranger, Seattle’s Only Newspaper
Last year, Ariel Pink cut a record titled Trick or Treat with shape-shifting psychedelic savants Vas Deferens Organization under the moniker Shits & Giggles. It probably slipped under your radar, but it’s worth digging for if you want to get a taste of Señor Pink’s weirder, more hallucinogenic inclinations.
Now the pairing yields another release, the Ariel Pink With Added Pizzazz 12″ EP (out July 9 on Free Dope and Fucking in the Streets Records, but only obtainable during Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti summer tour, which hits Seattle July 13 at Neumos). You can sample a sliver of that collaboration with the song “In the Heat of the NIght” here. The record was produced by VDO, which guarantees it a bizarre, hyperreal sheen. (By the way, scoop up anything you can find by VDO and their satellite projects like Sound, Jalopy, and Muz, especially if you dig the artists on the Nurse With Wound list.)

Pitchfork: Ariel Pink Announces New EP
Ariel Pink just released his latest album with his Haunted Graffiti backing band (the BNM’d Before Today) but the notoriously prolific lo-fi hero has another new release in the can already.
On July 9 via the label Free Dope and Fucking in the Streets, Pink will put out a self-titled collaborative 12″ EP with avant-jazzers Added Pizzazz (who were featured on Before Today’s opening cut, “Hot Body Rub”). The EP was recorded in Texas earlier this year and mastered all the way in Tel Aviv (cross-continental!). You can listen to the EP’s lead track, “In the Heat of the Night”, above, and peep the tracklist below.

ariel pink’s dallas connection
Some of our readers may have noticed the highly complimentary “Best New Music” review of Ariel Pink’s latest record on Pitchfork this week, and if you’ve been keeping tabs on his career over the past several years, you might find the review pretty surprising given Pitchfork’s luke-warm response to almost everything else the guy’s ever done. Of course, it’s just all too convenient that Pitchfork has finally come around to Ariel Pink now that he seems to be responsible for many of underground pop music’s most important trends over the past couple of years, but I suppose such behavior is pretty typical of the site these days.
The reason any of this matters to us, however, is that there’s a local connection– the excellent first track on the new album, “Hot Body Rub,” was recorded by Ariel Pink in Dallas with a group called Added Pizzaz, which features Aaron, Stefan AND Dennis Gonzalez (double/electric bass, drums/vibes and trumpet, respectively), as well as:
“Jim Lehnert on sax and trombone, Dennis Gonzalez on trumpet and Tamara Cauble on violin.. With the team of production and sound design by Vas Deferens Organization. Vas Deferens Organization is made up of Matt Castille, and Eric Lumbleau.”
The group apparently worked on a number of other tracks with Pink as well, and we’ll have more on that for you here as soon as we confirm all the details.
Update: We should mention that the track was recorded at Klearlight Studio, which has not only had a wealth of good local artists working there lately, such as Darktown Strutters, True Widow, the reunited and legendary underground metal act Divine Eve, and the excellent Berliner Eins, which features the studio’s own Jay Jernigan and Jonathan Montpas; but also yielded the Ariel Pink/VDO collaboration Shits and Giggles and the Trick Or Treat LP, which was mostly overlooked after it was recorded nearly two years ago, and possibly even more music from Ariel Pink that may or may not ever see release. And as has been reported, the studio of course, also acts as a label, with releases on its own Restore Vinyl imprint.
I can’t help but feel that Dallas is one of the only places where Ariel Pink recording in an actual studio and increasingly departing from his bedroom sound, which has been one of the most talked about and important narratives in music in 2010, goes largely ignored even though DFW is one of the actual settings for said narrative. And yet every painful acoustic troubadour project gets top billing. Hey, as some smart dead guy said, “That’s the way of the world.”
Correction: Earlier we had listed Jimi Bowman as being part of Berliner Eins, when he was in fact, the mix & mastering engineer on the duo’s 7-inch release, which you should make every effort to hear, since there are very few things like it in the current local scene. We apologize for this very rare mistake. -DL
