Cannabis Has “Clear Medical Benefits” For HIV Patients, Study Says — Smoked marijuana produces “substantial and comparable increases in food intake … with little evidence of discomfort and no impairment of cognitive performance”
June 28, 2007 – New York, NY, USA

New York, NY: Inhaling cannabis significantly increases daily caloric intake and body weight in HIV-positive patients, is well tolerated, and does not impair subjects’ cognitive performance, according to clinical trial data to be published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes (JAIDS).

Investigators at Columbia University in New York assessed the efficacy of inhaled cannabis and oral THC (Marinol) in a group of ten HIV-positive patients in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. All of the subjects participating in the study had prior experience using marijuana therape

Flames erupted across Tehran today as angry drivers set filling stations on fire. Could this be the start of one of the most important and most unanticipated news stories of the year?

A little more than a month ago, I was out in Orange County, California and had a pleasant dinner meeting with some of the nation’s leading Iran analysts. They were all angry about the White House’s highly provocative stance with respect to Iran. What, exactly, is the matter with it? “The Iranian populace is the most pro-American bloc in the region. They’re our prime asset. Any policy that start

A GOP Plan To Oust Cheney – washingtonpost.com:

The big question right now among Republicans is how to remove Vice President Cheney from office. Even before this week’s blockbuster series in The Post, discontent in Republican ranks was rising.

As the reputed architect of the war in Iraq, Cheney is viewed as toxic, and as the administration’s leading proponent of an attack on Iran, he is seen as dangerous. As long as he remains vice president, according to this thinking, he has the potential to drag down every member of the party — including the presidential nominee — in next year’s elections.

Reader Ed from Ireland recently asked:

I’m still really only a beginner into the Zen Habits lifestyle and your site as given me a great deal of helpful information instantly. Do you think there are any books, sites you could suggest that really made an impression on you?

That’s a tough one. I’m a book lover, to be honest, and to choose just a few books that have influenced me is like choosing among your babies. However, I’ve decided to share a few books that have shaped the way I think, and that I would highly recommend. These are not in order:

Simplify Your Life and Living the Simple Life by Elaine St. James. I listed this first because it is one of the books that most influenced the simple philosophy behind this site. I began simplifying my life when I first read these books a decade ago, and though I’ve had some ups and downs, I credit my love for simplifying to these books. They’re an easy read and there are some great tips in t

Not so Fergilicious: Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie’s come clean about her addiction to meth, and in this month’s Self magazine, she talks about a particularly hamper-ing moment on the drug.

One time she was so paranoid on the drug that she talked to her hamper for eight hours straight. “I remember thinking somebody was inside of it, going to come and get me, so I was talking to the person who was crawling in the hamper,” she admits. Now that’s a bad trip!

Marijuana Law’s U.S. History

Since the earliest settlers, marijuana has long been a cash crop in the United States. Many people, however, don’t know how it became illegal. This is a brief history of the infamous weed.

1619: The first American law pertaining to marijuana, passed by the Virginia Assembly, required every farmer to grow it. Fibers from hemp, which is much less potent than the smokable kind, were used to make ship sails and rope.

1900-1930: Sailors and West Indian immigrants smoked marijuana in port cities along the Gulf of Mexico. In New Orleans, newspaper articles associated the drug with jazz musicians, prostitutes and the underworld. Police officers in Texas said marijuana “aroused a lust for blood” and gave its users “super human strength.”

DELCAMBRE, La. (AP) – It soon will be a crime in this Cajun-country town to let the waistband of your pants sag too low in public.

Mayor Carol Broussard has said he will sign an ordinance the town council approved this week setting penalties of up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for being caught in pants that show undergarments or certain parts of the body.

Broussard said he has nothing against saggy pants but thinks people who wear them should use discretion. “It’s gotten way out of hand out here,” he said.

Albert Roy, the councilman who introduced the ordinance, said he thought the fine was a little steep and should be more in the $25 range, but he still favoured the measure.

“I don’t know if it will do any good, but it won’t hurt,” Roy said. “It’s obvious,

LUXEMBOURG glugs more than 15.5 litres of alcohol per person in a year, more than any other country. One explanation is that the duty on alcohol is relatively cheap in the tiny nation, encouraging booze tourism from its more heavily taxed neighbours. No such explanation for the Irish, however, who quaff 13.7 litres a year, according to the World Health Organisation. European countries, with their cultural acceptance of alcohol, tend to dominate the top places. In America, where stricter minumum-age requirements apply, the average person drinks 8.6 litres a year.

Senator Lieberman advocates military strike on Iran

Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) on CBS’s Face the Nation this morning laid out a case for the US taking military action against Iran.

“Iraq is now the main front in the long war we are fighting against the Islamist terrorists who attacked us on 9/11. In fact 90% of the suicide bombers in Iraq today killing Iraqis and American soldiers are foreign Al Qaeda fighters. Iran is training and equipping soldiers, Iraqis, to come in and kill American soldiers and Iraqis,” said Lieberman.

Host Bob Schieffer then asked Lieberman what the United States should do about Iran.

Lieberman said that Iran is at war with the US and “the moderates” and that while he supports sitting down and talking with the Iranian government, that might not be enough.

“If we’re going to sit and talk with the Iranians, tell them what

Zogby poll: Majority supports impeaching Bush for wiretapping
WASHINGTON, D.C. — By a margin of 52 to 43 percent, citizens want Congress to impeach President Bush if he wiretapped American citizens without a judge’s approval, according to a new poll commissioned by AfterDowningStreet.org, a grassroots coalition that supports a Congressional investigation of Pres. Bush’s decision to invade Iraq in 2003.

The poll was conducted by Zogby International.

The poll found that 52 percent of respondents agreed with the statement: “If President Bush wiretapped American citizens without the approval of a judge, do you agree or disagree that Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment.”

Of those contacted, 43 percent disagreed, and 6 percent said they didn’t know or declined to answer. The poll has a margin of error of 2.9 percent.

“The American people are not buying Bush’s outrageous claim that he has the power to wiretap American citizens without a warrant. Americans
