The Realist was a satirical newsletter founded by Paul Krassner from in 1958. It mixed true stories with parodies, and sometimes it was hard to tell the difference. It was a freak’s version of Mad magazine (and I just discovered on Wikipedia that the first issue was produced in Mad’s offices).
When Krassner relaunched The Realist in the 1980s I devoured each issue as it arrived in my mailbox. It was a major inspiration for bOING bOING, the zine. If fact if you look at the subject matter covered in The Realist, you’ll see that much of it is remarkably similar to the stuff you’ll find on Boing Boing today. For example, the June 1963 issue (shown above) had the following articles: The Arrest of Lenny Bruce, “Negative Thinking” by Robert Anton Wilson, Epizootics by Gershon Legman, the FDA vs Scientology, and weird items clipped from the mainstream press. I can hardly believe this is from a magazine published 44 years ago! Mind blowing.
I have only seen a couple of the early issues of The Realist, so I was elated to learn that outre-culture archivist Ethan Persoff has started on online archive for this eccentric and delightful newsletter.

Spike Lee: will return to Katrina story
By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer Mon Jun 4, 6:54 PM ET
NEW YORK – Spike Lee plans to return to New Orleans for HBO to follow up the stories told in last year’s four-hour documentary about the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Lee, who accepted a Peabody Award at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel on Monday for directing “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts,” said he’s still not sure when that will be. Now is too soon, he said.

“The story is not over,” he said backstage. “It’s still something that’s evolving and we want to keep on top of it.”

His film was able to tell stories not often seen on television news because of the time he had to work with, and the ability to show things others couldn’t. Some of his interview subjec

The Cool Tools weblog sings the praises of the Rosetta Stone Language Learning system, online or desktop software for getting fluent in a foreign tongue:

The genius of the process involves using pictures to teach you how to listen, speak, read, and write, rather than teaching by translation, as virtually all other language programs do. So as you learn your new language you associate the new words, phrases, and grammatical structures directly with the pictures rather than mentally translating through your native language. Using this method, most people can use a Rosetta Stone program regardless of native tongue, cutting out a major limitation of the translation-based language programs.

Several Lifehacker readers recommended Rosetta Stone in a recent language learning call for help, too. While it sounds effective, Rosetta ain’t cheap: the CD or online access ranges from $109-$339, depending on level and delivery method (Windows only update: and Mac, CD or online subscription.)

Bob Marley’s “Exodus” released on limited edition USB stick

It’s not the first album to be released on a USB stick, but this new limited edition drive packing Bob Marley’s classic “Exodus” is certainly one of the highest-profile releases to date, and apparently the first from a major label catalog artist. While the exact capacity of the drive isn’t clear, there’s at least enough space to store three videos of Bob Marley’s 1977 performance at London’s Rainbow Theatre in addition to the ten tracks from the album itself. As it’s not coming from a record label that’s seen fit to ditch DRM, however, there’s also presumably a few restrictions on how you can use those tracks, so you’ll just have to save your rendition of “No DRM, No Cry” for another

Fire on Marlborough Street [1975]

On July 22, 1975, photograph Stanley J. Forman working for the Boston Herald American newspaper when a police scanner picked up an emergency: “Fire on Marlborough Street!”
Climbed atop the fire truck, Forman shot the picture of a young woman, Diana Bryant, and a very young girl, Tiare Jones when they fell helplessly. Diana Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene. The young girl lived. Despite a heroic effort, O’Neil knew he had been just seconds away from saving the lives of both.

Photo coverage from the tragic event garnered Stanley Forman a Pulitzer Prize. But more important, his work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes.

New 125 Miles per Gallon Toyota Prius
The Pennsylvania based Lithium Technology Corporation recently demonstrated a new type of “plug-in” Toyota Prius hybrid car. The new model is based on advanced lithium iron phosphate battery which allows the hybrid car to travel up to a distance of 125 miles per gallon of fuel – making it possibly the most efficient mass-produced car in the world.

Lithium Technology Corporation (LTC) announced that its’ new lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) technology might be incoporated in hybrid cars expected to arrive in the market in 2008-2009. The Toyota Prius demonstrated by LTC was also equipped with a “plug-in” capability which allows it to recharge using conventional power sources (such as a power outlet in the owner’s garage). Currently there are no “plug-in” capable cars on the

Recordings of concert intermissions

Recordings of concert intermissions:
David Pescovitz:

“Favorite Intermissions: Music Before and Between Beethoven, Stravisnky, Holst” is a collection of the ambient intermission sounds–murmurs, coughs, tuning, musical warm-ups–before and after orchestral performances. John Cage would be proud. The compiler, sound artist Christopher DeLaurenti, bootlegged the recordings while attending concerts for seven years. This is his greatest hits from more than 50 recorded hours, presented in 3D binaural audio. John Cage would be proud. From the New York Times, where you can also hear selections from the CD:

“Every composer, every sound artist, every musician, poses a fundamental question to everyone else,” Mr. DeLaurenti said in an interview. “It’s a request to listen. I have faith that in any sound or collection of sounds, music lies therein.

“It does sound crazy,” he continued. “Craziness is the root of many great musical ideas and the source for new ways of listening and considering the world around us…”

Virtually all concert halls ban photography or recording, and contracts with musicians’ unions strictly govern what can be preserved, so Mr. DeLaurenti had to go under cover. He said he was never caught but occasionally drew suspicious looks from ushers.

He honed a technique of often shifting his posture and moving around. “Most people are not observant and rarely look at one thing for longer than 10 seconds,” he said. He also showed unfailing courtesy when questioned. “People don’t want trouble,” he explained.

Today is a big day for music downloaders, because iTunes is finally offering DRM-free music for your listening pleasure. To sweeten the deal, each also has a lighter AAC compression applied to it, 256kbps instead of iTunes’ customary 128kbps.

Called iTunes Plus, it’s available now, and all it asks is an extra 30 cents per song ($1.29 for each instead of $.99 for iTunes songs). Is there a big difference in sound quality between those 128kbps iTunes files and these 256kbps iTunes Plus songs? Let’s dig into iTunes Plus, grab a few files and compare them to the old-style locked-up tunes.

To access the iTunes Plus songs, a limited selection with only EMI artists thus far, first you must upgrade your iTiunes software to version 7.2.0.34. Then, you simply

Contact Information For 50 Politicians Who Take Campaign Money From The RIAA 15,579 Views

When you voted the RIAA the worst company in America you gave us an assignment. But how can we improve the customer service of a recording industry trade group? It’s not an easy task. Couldn’t you have voted for Home Depot? U-Haul? Anyway…

One of the ways the RIAA operates is by donating money to politicians who then enact favorable legislation on their behalf. Don’t let the optimist in you believe that this doesn’t work. It does.

But wait, aren’t these representatives supposed to work for you? Sure. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of 50 congresspeople who took campaign contributions from the RIAA in the last election cycle. We’ve linked their contact information so that you, as their constituents, can inform them that they
