Mice can jump pretty high! At least in Boston they can.

They can jump, so that cup would not be good enough. Also something that as sides that are either straight up and down or even slant in (as opposed to slanting out the way the cup does) would be even better. And as far as releasing goes – do it far away otherwise it will just find it’s way back, and back inside.
