The Cool Tools weblog sings the praises of the Rosetta Stone Language Learning system, online or desktop software for getting fluent in a foreign tongue:
The genius of the process involves using pictures to teach you how to listen, speak, read, and write, rather than teaching by translation, as virtually all other language programs do. So as you learn your new language you associate the new words, phrases, and grammatical structures directly with the pictures rather than mentally translating through your native language. Using this method, most people can use a Rosetta Stone program regardless of native tongue, cutting out a major limitation of the translation-based language programs.
Several Lifehacker readers recommended Rosetta Stone in a recent language learning call for help, too. While it sounds effective, Rosetta ain’t cheap: the CD or online access ranges from $109-$339, depending on level and delivery method (Windows only update: and Mac, CD or online subscription.)

It’s not the first album to be released on a USB stick, but this new limited edition drive packing Bob Marley’s classic “Exodus” is certainly one of the highest-profile releases to date, and apparently the first from a major label catalog artist. While the exact capacity of the drive isn’t clear, there’s at least enough space to store three videos of Bob Marley’s 1977 performance at London’s Rainbow Theatre in addition to the ten tracks from the album itself. As it’s not coming from a record label that’s seen fit to ditch DRM, however, there’s also presumably a few restrictions on how you can use those tracks, so you’ll just have to save your rendition of “No DRM, No Cry” for another

On July 22, 1975, photograph Stanley J. Forman working for the Boston Herald American newspaper when a police scanner picked up an emergency: “Fire on Marlborough Street!â€
Climbed atop the fire truck, Forman shot the picture of a young woman, Diana Bryant, and a very young girl, Tiare Jones when they fell helplessly. Diana Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene. The young girl lived. Despite a heroic effort, O’Neil knew he had been just seconds away from saving the lives of both.
Photo coverage from the tragic event garnered Stanley Forman a Pulitzer Prize. But more important, his work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes.

The Pennsylvania based Lithium Technology Corporation recently demonstrated a new type of “plug-in” Toyota Prius hybrid car. The new model is based on advanced lithium iron phosphate battery which allows the hybrid car to travel up to a distance of 125 miles per gallon of fuel – making it possibly the most efficient mass-produced car in the world.
Lithium Technology Corporation (LTC) announced that its’ new lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) technology might be incoporated in hybrid cars expected to arrive in the market in 2008-2009. “Favorite Intermissions: Music Before and Between Beethoven, Stravisnky, Holst” is a collection of the ambient intermission sounds–murmurs, coughs, tuning, musical warm-ups–before and after orchestral performances. John Cage would be proud. The compiler, sound artist Christopher DeLaurenti, bootlegged the recordings while attending concerts for seven years. This is his greatest hits from more than 50 recorded hours, presented in 3D binaural audio. John Cage would be proud. From the New York Times, where you can also hear selections from the CD:
“Every composer, every sound artist, every musician, poses a fundamental question to everyone else,†Mr. DeLaurenti said in an interview. “It’s a request to listen. I have faith that in any sound or collection of sounds, music lies therein.
“It does sound crazy,†he continued. “Craziness is the root of many great musical ideas and the source for new ways of listening and considering the world around us…”
Virtually all concert halls ban photography or recording, and contracts with musicians’ unions strictly govern what can be preserved, so Mr. DeLaurenti had to go under cover. He said he was never caught but occasionally drew suspicious looks from ushers.
He honed a technique of often shifting his posture and moving around. “Most people are not observant and rarely look at one thing for longer than 10 seconds,†he said. He also showed unfailing courtesy when questioned. “People don’t want trouble,†he explained.

Hal Robins points out that Stephen Colbert has a hilarious article about The Church of the SubGenius on Wikiality (The Truthiness Encyclopedia), his spoof of Wikipedia. It appears that Stephen, who bears a striking resemblance to J.R. “Bob” Dobbs, considers himself more of a “SuperGenius”, rather than a plain old “SubGenius”.
Anyway, when the Internets came along, the Church of the SubGenius moved right along with it. Today, the image of J.R. “Bob” Dobbs is considered one of the four great centers of Internets blasphemy, along with liberalism, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and those Godless, heathen atheists. Many atheists have embraced SubGenius philosophies, but the Church has found an especially rich vein of followers among the ranks of Linux geeks, role-playing afficionados, comic book fans, porn stars, and other stay-at-home no-lifers. Sadly, these same Internets-Americans often tend toward Internets addiction (especially online gaming). It is through their addiction and/or recovery efforts that the Church of the SubGenius has taken hold online.
